TDR Rule in Indian Railway

Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) can be submitted to claim refund basically for the people who did not travel by train they booked the ticket. The refund process will take at-least 60 days and more. TDR rule in Indian Railway are following.

TDR Refund Eligibility

If the customer was not able to perform the journey due to any /or the following reason, can submit the TDR.

16Difference of Fare as Passenger Travel in Lower ClassTDR shall be filed within 02 days of the date of issue of the certificate (excluding the day of issue of the certificate) and the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued but the ticket checking staff is to be sent through post to IRCTC.
17Missing the connecting train due to late running of first train.PNR should be linked PNRs and TDR shall be filed within 03 Hours of actual arrival of train by which passenger has travelled.
18Passengers Not Allowed to travel by Railway due to COVID 19 SymptomsTDR shall be filed for not travelled passengers, within 10 days from Date of Journey and original TTE Certificate (GC/EFT) issued to be sent through post to IRCTC.

Further Details

  • Train Cancelled by Railways
    • The train is canceled by the Railway due to accidents, breaches or floods, Bandh or Rail Roko agitation, etc, a full refund of the fare of the entire booked journey will be granted Online cancellation can be done up to✅ 72 hrs.
    • In case of train cancellation on its entire run from originating station to the destination station by Railways, your full ticket fare will be refunded automatically. In cancellation required by the user.
  • Train running Late by More than ✅ 03 hours
    • The full fare will be refunded.
  • The difference of fare in case ✅ Proper Coach not attached
    • The difference of fare between the booked class and the lower traveled class will be refunded. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the lower class traveled is a must to claim for refund.
  • ✅ AC Failure
    • In case of AC failure of AC 1 class/Executive class : Difference of fare between AC 1  class or Executive class and First Class will be refunded for the distance AC not worked. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked is a must claim for refund.
    • In case of AC failure of AC 2/AC 3 class: Difference of fare between AC 2/AC 3 class and Sleeper Class will be refunded for the distance AC not worked. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked is a must claim for refund.
    • In case of AC failure of AC chair car class: Difference of fare between AC chair car class and the second class will be refunded for the distance AC not worked. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked is a must claim for refund.
  • Traveled without proper ✅ ID proof
    • The passenger will be considered without a ticket and will be charged accordingly. Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds can be approached for discretionary refund. Excess fare ticket (EFT) (in original) issued by the TTE is a must to claim for refund.
  • ✅ Wrongly charged by TTE
    • A full refund will be granted by the Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds. Excess fare ticket (EFT) (in original) issued by the TTE is a must to claim for refund.
  • ✅ Party partially traveled
    • Refunds will be granted by the Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds as per rule. Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the less passenger traveled is a must claim for refund.
    • Partially used reserved ticket by ✅ Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Jan Shatabadi Exp- No refund is allowed.
  • Passenger ✅ Not traveled
    • Refund will be granted by the Chief Commercial Manager/Refunds as per extant Railway rule.
  • Refund on ✅ Tatkal Ticket
    • If it is canceled up to 24 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train 25% excluding the Tatkal charges will be refunded. Thereafter no refund means would be zero refund.
  • The railway is ✅ not able to provide accommodation
    • A full refund will be granted.
  • ✅ Train Diverted And Passenger not Travelled.

    • TDR shall be filed within 2 days of the date of issue of the certificate(excluding the day of issue of the certificate) and the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued by the ticket checking staff is to be sent through post to IRCTC.
  • Difference Of Fare In Case Proper Coach Not Attached.
    • TDR shall be filed within 02 days of the date of issue of the certificate (excluding the day of issue of the Certificate) and the original certificate(GC /EFT) issued by the ticket checking staff is to be sent through post to IRCTC. A full refund will be provided to passengers who don’t want to travel by alternative arrangement.

Please note that the decision about the acceptance/rejection or amount of refund will be taken by the concerned Zonal Railways as per extant Refund rules of Indian Railways and not by IRCTC.

Covid 19 : TDR Rule

Indian Railway announced that Passengers Not Allowed To Travel by Railway due to COVID-19 Condition”, Refund shall be processed through TDR. Passengers are request to file TDR within 10 days from the Date of Journey and sent TTE certificate to IRCTC for further process of refund.For further details Please check Refund Rules. Note:- Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the AC not worked or Excess fare ticket(EFT) (in original) issued by the TTE for wrongly charged or Certificate from the TTE (in original) for the less passenger traveled may be submitted to the following address along with the application to claim for refund.

      • Sleeper Class/Second Class (SL/2S) : Rs.40/- per ticket plus service Tax.
      • Higher Class (1AC,2AC,3AC,CC,3E,FC) : Rs.60/- per ticket plus service Tax
  • IRCTC Service Charges for E-Ticket (Service charge levied is not Refundable)
    • Class and Service Charge are following
      • Sleeper Class/Second Class (SL/2S) : Rs.10/- per ticket plus service Tax

File TDR for Train tickets booked through IRTCTC

TDR Filing Details
  • Login to your IRCTC Account.
  • Click to Booked Ticket History.
  • List of tickets where date of Journey has elapsed.
  • Select PNR for which TDR is to be filed and click “File TDR” Button.
  • Open passenger name from the ticket details for claiming TDR refund.
  • Select the reason form list box or type the reason if you select others.
  • Click Submit Button.
  • If Selected “Other” option new text box will open.
  • Customer can fill the details of reason and then click Submit button.
  • Confirmation will be show for completing filing TDR.
  • If details are confirmed Click “OK” in alert window.
  • Your TDR has been Filed Successfully.
  • TDR Entry Confirmation page will be show PNR Number, Transaction ID, Reference number, TDR Status, Reason.

e-Ticket : TDR Rule

The E-ticket confirmed through charting at originating station or at the previous remote location cannot be cancelled. The refund of such ticket will be processed through TDR. In case of partial cancellation, diversion or short termination of trains, E-Ticket passengers are required to file TDR as per refund rules to claim the refund.

  • The TDR Refund will be processed as per Extant Railway Rules.
  • TDR should be filed before or within 1 hour of the Departure of Train.
  • The refund process will take at-least 60 days and more
  • E-ticket refund request (after chart preparation) can be filed online.

Ticket deposit receipt(TDR) Rules in case of E-Ticket:-

  • E-ticket refund request (after chart preparation) can be filed online.
  • The customers are requested to use the online TDR Filing and Status tracking service provided by IRCTC. Select the “File TDR” Link in the left panel under the “My Transactions” menu for filing TDR online IRCTC will forward the claim to Concerned Railways to process the refund and money of refund amount will be credited back to same account through which payment was made after receiving the same from the concerned Railways. In case of e-ticket the refund is processed by the Refund Office of the Zonal Railways in whose jurisdiction the destination station of the train falls.
  • Online File TDR option is not available for Agent. If ticket booked through Agent the refund request should routed through Agent only.
  • Whenever Agents received such a request from their customers they are required to send a mail to etickets@irctc.co.in containing following details.

IRCTC will forward the claim to Concerned Railways to process the refund and money of refund amount will be credited back to the same account through which payment was made after receiving the same from the concerned Railways. For any other clarifications please mail to etickets@irctc.co.in

i-Ticket : TDR Rule

Online refund request is not allowed for i-ticket.

  • Customers are requested to surrender the I-Ticket with the Station Master and obtain a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) within 30 days from the date of scheduled travel.
  • Send your claim for refund to the following address attaching the original copy of the TDR to:

  • The TDR Refund will be processed as per Extant Railway Rules:
  • IRCTC will forward the claim to Concerned Railways to process the refund and money of refund amount will be credited back to same account through which payment was made after receiving the same from the concerned Railways.

IRCTC will process the refund claim with the Railway Administration and refund granted by the Railway shall be credited to your account. Refund claims under above clause may require at least 60 days or more for processing

Tatkal Ticket : TDR Rule

  • No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets.
  • For contingent cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges will be deducted as per existing Railway rules.
  • Partial cancellation of Tatkal e-tickets is allowed but at least one passenger with ID card printed on ERS/VRM should not be cancelled.
  • On cancellation of all the passengers whose ID card details is printed on ERS/VRM, all the passengers on that e-ticket will be cancelled.

TDR Filing for Agent

The Authorized Agents of IRCTC cannot file TDRs online. They have to send a mail to IRCTC for filing TDR. The customers who have to claim refund against the tickets purchased through the Agents should approach to the concerned Agent for filing TDR. It should be kept in mind the Railways decide refund cases as per extent Railway Refund Rules. As such it should be ensure that the TDRs are filed within the prescribed time limits. Whenever Agents receive such requests from their customers, they are required to send a mail to IRCTC at
nominated e-mail id, provided by IRCTC through their registered e-mail id containing following details within prescribed time. If any TDR request is received at other than nominated email id or from other than registered e-mail id, IRCTC shall not be entertain the same.

The agent will obtain written request from the customer for refund for record purpose as proof that the customer has preferred claim for refund. The cases in which TDR are filed are decided by the Zonal Railway under whose jurisdiction the train destination falls. After receipt of the refund amount from the said Railway, refund amount will be credited back to same account of the Agent through which payment was made.

✅ How much percentage of ticket price is refunded if passenger not traveled under TDR refund scheme in railways?

It depends on the reason you have filed for the TDR. Basically your TDR application requires the approval of zonal manager, it differs in time depending on your reason and yes sometimes your TDR gets rejected also.

✅ What is EFT detail in filing IRCTC TDR?

✅ What is CR registered status in IRCTC TDR?

CR is Claim Refund which means you can obtain a refund of a ticket on a journey not taken. You could also check back on the TDR status from time to time. If it shows Admin Approved, it means that your case is eligible for a refund as approved by the IRCTC Corporate/IRCTC Zonal Office.

✅ Suppose I am unable to approach the concerned authorities, what do I do for filing TDR?

In exceptional circumstances you may obtain a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) from the nearest major station within 3 (Three) days from the day of scheduled travel. You must then submit an application in the prescribed form (Printed on the back of TDR) to the Chief Commercial Manager (Refunds) of the Zonal Railway to which the Ticket Deposit Receipt-issuing station belongs. This application must be submitted within 10 (Ten) days from the date of your journey. The refund officer will examine the case on merit and, if decided, refund will be sent to you by a Station Pay Order (to be en cashed at station) or Money Order or Crossed Cheque.
