Hyderabad MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) is a Suburban / Local rail system in Hyderabad. It was flagged off on August 9, 2003, and it is a joint partnership of Telangana and the South Central Railway, run by South Central Railway.

The MMTS service was introduced to cater to the needs of Intra-city and suburban traffic. Over time, the number of MMTS services was increased leading to rising in patronage for these train services. MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport Service) is one of the cheapest and economical modes of transport in twin cities. The MMTS services cater to a stretch of 50 Kms spread over Falaknuma – Secunderabad – Hyderabad – Begumpet – Lingampalli – Telapur – Ramchandrapuram covering 29 Railway stations, connecting the Eastern part of the city with the Western end.

It connects Secunderabad, Nampally, Falaknuma, and Lingampally with a commuter base of approximately 1 lakh a day. There are First Class and General compartments, and a separate Ladies compartment.

A combined pass is issued by APSRTC buses and MMTS. So buying a single pass will help in traveling by bus as well as the train.

The Multi Modal Transport Service (MMTS) is a unique concept of urban transportation in the entire country. It is o­ne of the most Economical, Safe and convenient modes of suburban transport system for the people of twin cities of Hyderabad. SCR began gradual resumption of the MMTS services from June, 2021 and since then has been progressively increasing the number of services. As of now, 86 services are being operated to meet the suburban travel needs of the twin cities region.

The services cater to a stretch of 50 Kms spread over the sections of Falaknuma – Secunderabad – Hyderabad – Begumpet – Lingampalli – Telapur – Ramchandrapuram covering 29 Railway stations, connecting the South and Eastern parts of the city to the fast progressive Western end. The timings of MMTS services have been scheduled so as to seamlessly meet the travel needs of different segment of passengers, duly giving importance to the passenger traffic and destinations. The services facilitate the travel needs of scattered groups of passengers including those travelling long distances due to work and family commitments.

The services commence as early as 04.30 am and continue till 00.30 at midnight. In addition, MMTS is the most cost effective modes of public transport, with a minimum fare of Rs. 5 and maximum fare of Rs. 15. Season ticket facility is also available for daily commuters of MMTS which is very less when compared to the other modes of transport. Apart from booking counters, MMTS tickets can also be purchased through Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) and Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile app.

Shri Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager (in-charge), South Central Railway appealed the passengers to avail various facilities such as cash less ticketing options and season tickets to make their journey hassle-free. He stated that MMTS is the best mode of transport to reach the destination safely in a cost effective manner.

In order to facilitate the transmission of information to the general public to utilize the services of MMTS trains, the detailed timings (From 18.04.2022) of the services between various sections are detailed below.

MMTS ~ First-Class Base Fares Reduced ~ 05.05.2022

The fare of the popular sub-urban train service in the twin cities of Secunderabad – Hyderabad region i.e., MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport Service) is set to reduce by upto 50% for the First Class Single journey passengers. The Ministry of Railways has decided to rationalize the basic fares of First Class in the suburban train services with effect from 5th May 2022. Accordingly, the First-class base fares for single journey for the passengers travelling in the MMTS trains over Sub-urban sections of Secunderabad and Hyderabad Divisions has been reduced.
The reduced fares for single journey passengers travelling in First class in MMTS will be as follows from 5th May 2022:

Fare :-

  • Secunderabad to Umdanagar – ₹10/-
  • Umdanagar to Medchal – ₹ 15/-
  • Medchal to Secunderabad – ₹10/-

The minimum fare for MMTS is Rs 5 and the maximum fare is Rs.15. in fact, the minimum fare of Rs.5 is continuing since the inception of MMTS services. The season ticket facility is also available for daily commuters of MMTS.

MMTS Trains ~ Railway extended Season Tickets Validity

  • MMTS Passengers can avail benefits of Extended Season Tickets & Additional Bonus on Cash-less Purchases
  • Railway Board has extended the validity of all the season tickets to the extent of the number of days lost, from the date of resumption of the train services i.e., 23rd June 2021.

South Central Railway announced on 22.06.2021 that in line with the gradual resumption of the train services being done over the South Central Railways, since the advent of the COVID-19 epidemic, the suburban transport service in the twin cities of Hyderabad – Secunderabad, i.e., MMTS services is being partially restored with effect from 23rd June 2021. These services were canceled last year to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Due to the cancellation of the MMTS train services during March 2020, some of the season ticket holders having a valid tenure couldn’t utilize their tickets for the remaining period. To assist such ticket holders, Railway Board has extended the validity of all the season tickets to the extent of the number of days lost, from the date of resumption of the train services i.e., 23rd June 2021. All such season tickets are eligible for extending the tenure with effect from 23rd June 2021 in proportion to the number of days lost i.e., in terms of the remaining tenure of the valid season tickets As such, passengers holding valid Season tickets (purchased either on App or at booking counters) should approach the booking counters at MMTS / Sub-urban stations to validate and extend their existing season tickets.

All avenues available for purchasing tickets – Extra benefits to go cash-less

Apart from the option of purchasing tickets at the Booking counters, all cash-less modes of purchasing MMTS tickets will be functional for the MMTS travelers. Further, to encourage passengers to opt for contact-less and Cash-less purchase of MMTS tickets, these cash-less modes of ticket purchases are also being given additional benefits as below:

  • ATVMs (Automatic Ticket Vending Machines) are available at all major MMTS stations, wherein purchases can be done through Smart cards. Passengers booking tickets through ATVMs will get an additional benefit of 3% bonus purchases. Passengers wanting to opt for purchasing through ATVMS via Smart Cards or those Passengers wanting to extend the validity of their earlier Smart cards can get it done at any of the ticket booking counters at MMTS / Sub-urban stations.
  • Passengers can also buy MMTS tickets through the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile App (available for all Android, Windows and iOS based Smartphone users). This facility can be used for purchasing both journey tickets as well as season tickets. Here, passengers can get an additional 5% bonus in case they opt to pay via the R-Wallet available in the app.

Shri. Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, South Central Railway appealed to all MMTS rail users to avail both the facilities of extension of season tickets as well as Cash-less ticketing options to make their journey safer and hassle-free. He advised rail users to utilize digital mode for purchasing the MMTS tickets, in order to avoid overcrowding at general booking counters and also to reduce physical contact while purchasing the tickets.
