Tourist Circuit Trains : Private players can buy coaches soon

Railways plan to spread Rail based tourism among masses through leasing of coaching stock to interested parties to run them as theme based cultural, religious and other Tourist Circuit train. ED level committee constituted by Ministry of Railways to formulate policy and terms and conditions

Indian Railway annoyed on 11.09.2021 that to tap the potential of tourism sector and to leverage the core strengths of the professionals of tourism sector in tourism activities like marketing, hospitality, integration of services, reach with customer base, expertise in development /identification of tourist circuits etc, Indian Railways is planning to spread Rail based tourism among masses through leasing of coaching stock to interested parties to run them as theme based cultural, religious and other Tourist Circuit train.

Broad features of the Proposed Model :-

  • Leasing of coaches as per desired configuration of interested parties. Bare shells may also be taken on lease. Outright purchase of coaches can also be done.
  • Minor refurbishment of coaches is permitted.
  • Leasing to be done for a minimum period of 5 years and extendable till codal life of coaches.
  • Minimum train composition for leasing purpose as per policy guidelines.
  • Interested party to develop/decide business model (routes, itinerary, tariff etc).
  • Simple registration process for interested parties based on eligibility criteria.
  • Indian Railways will levy haulage charges, nominal stabling charges and lease charges. (No lease charges for outright purchase).

  • Timely approvals for coach refurbishment and itineraries.
  • No haulage for maintenance runs.
  • Third party advertising allowed inside train, Branding of train permitted.

Indian Railways to introduce ‘Gurudwara Circuit Train’ for Sikh devotees

The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said (12.09.2021) that they are ready to launch an exclusive Gurudwara Circuit train for Sikhs and it will take passengers to all the famous pilgrimage sites in the country. As per news, the 11-day journey will commence and end in Amritsar. During this period, the proposed train will cover four prominent gurudwaras, namely Harminder Sahib in Amritsar, Patna Sahib in Patna (Bihar), Hazoor Nanded Sahib in Nanded, Maharashtra & Damdama Sahib in Bhatinda.

If a passenger books a seat in an AC compartment, he/she will have to pay between INR 900-1000. The train will have different halts including Ambala, Saharanpur, Lucknow, Manmad, Surat, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Bathinda and Amritsar. It will feature 16 coaches, and travellers will have a choice of sleeper class and air-conditioned class.

Also the train will run on a leasing model for a minimum of five years which can be extended. As per officials, the lease cost per year will be 7 percent of the depreciated value of the coach.

The train will also feature a pantry car and passengers will have to book the food in advance. Earlier, the railways introduced ‘Ramayana Circuit’ and ‘Buddha Circuit’ special trains for the benefit of Hindu and Buddhist devotees. Now they have launched ‘Sikh Circuit’ for Sikh devotees. In future, the railways is planning to begin the ‘Gandhi Circuit Special Train’ to make people aware of Gandhi’s philosophy.
