Changing the Name of traveler on the list of your journey

For getting these facilities, customer can now approach the nearest Railway Reservation Office with ‘Electronic Reservation Slip’ print out and photo identity proof of one of the passenger traveling in the ticket at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train as per extant Railway rules.

Please note that reservation offices can change ‘Boarding Station’ , ‘Passenger Name’ against a request from the passenger as per extant railway rules applicable to other face to face counter booked tickets .

Facility in the name change of passenger holding confirmed e-reservation has been permitted as per extant Railway rules noted as under:- Where the passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train to the nearest Railway Reservation office. It can be transferred to an-other member of his family, meaning, Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Husband and Wife.

He should bring the ‘Electronic Reservation Slip’ print out along with photo identity card proof, a proof for blood relation desired to be changed . Where the passenger is a Government Servant proceeding on duty and appropriate authority, makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train.

Remember one time change in Name only allowed by Indian Railways. Always try to cross check the booking ticket before confirm the ticket payment on the IRCTC Online and for the Manual reservation from the railway station  please cross the 2 time at the time of Form filling to avoid the errors occurring on the train ticket.   Recently railways make mandatory for the Full Name of entered Reservation Name and ID proof name matching. If fail this then you will be considered like ticket less passenger.  

If you have a confirmed train tickets but you don’t want to cancel the tickets. You can simply pass on your ticket to a family member by seeking Indian Railway’s permission. Following are the details.

  • You need to have a confirmed ticket to opt for this service.
  • Only Chief Reservation Supervisor of important stations are authorised by Railway Administration to permit the change of name of a passenger having a seat or berth reserved in his name.
  • For transfer to a family member :- As per the guidelines a person can transfer the confirmed ticket to another family member be it the father, mother, sibling, children or spouse. The person would need to make a written request 24 hours prior the scheduled departure.
  • For marriage party : – If the passenger is part of a marriage party then the confirmed ticket can be transferred to another person with a written request by an individual deemed to be the head of the group 24 hours before departure.
  • Government employees :- A government employee can also make a written request before 24 hours of departure if he/she wants to transfer a confirmed ticket.
  • Rule for students :- In case a student of a recognised educational institute wants to transfer his or her ticket, then they will need to get the approval of the head of the institution. A written request by that authoritative figure will allow the transfer of the ticket to another student from the same institution.
  • Rules for National Cadet Corps :- This facility has been extended to the National Cadet Corps. A cadet or a group of cadets can get reservation ticket or tickets transferred to other cadets with a written request by any officer who is the head of such a group, 24 hours before departure.

Changing Boarding Station of your journey

  • In case the boarding station is changed within 24 hours of departure of train, no refund shall be permissible in normal circumstance; however, in exceptional circumstances like cancellation of train, non-attachment of coach, late running of train by more than three hours, normal refund rules shall be applicable.
  • In case a passenger has changed the boarding station, he/she will lose all the rights to board the train from the original boarding station. If found travelling without any proper authority to travel, passenger will have to pay fare with penalty between original boarding station to changed boarding station.
  • Boarding station change is not allowed if ticket is seized.
  • Boarding station change is not allowed for the PNRs with VIKALP option.
  • Online boarding station change is not allowed for I-Ticket.
  • Boarding station change is not allowed for current booking ticket.

Steps to Change Boarding Point during ticket booking:
  • Login by entering your User name and Password.
  • Provide your desired “From – To” station, “Date of Journey” and “Class” of travel. Further click on Find train button to get the train list.
  • Select the train from the train lists and click the Book Now button.
  • On the Passenger input page select the Change Boarding Station option.
  • A pop up window will appears with the list of stations between the selected train route, choose your desired boarding point.
  • After selecting the station updated Boarding station can be seen on the right side ticket window.
Steps to Change Boarding Point after ticket booking:
  • Login by entering your User name and Password.
  • Go to MY ACCOUNT : My Transactions : Booked Ticket History
  • Select the ticket for which you want to change the Boarding Station and select the Change Boarding Point button.
  • A pop up window will appears with the list of stations between the selected train route, choose your desired boarding point.
  • On selecting the station system will ask for confirmation, click “OK” to change the boarding point of your ticket.
  • Success alert message will appears if boarding station is changed successfully.
  • Corresponding message regarding updation of boarding point will sent on mobile number provided during booking.

  1. Dear all, Please note that, the facility of name change is applicable to ONLY to the Confirmed Tickets in General Quota but not for TATKAL RESERVATIONS.
