Operation Swarn by Indian Railway


The Project Swarn is to upgrade cleanliness and other infrastructure of the selected trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdis.

Makeover Details of Rajdhani, Shatabdi Trains

From October of this the premier trains Rajdhani and Shatabdi to get complete makeover with more passenger amenities, a famous Newspaper reported. The upgraded passenger amenities included

  • Trolley Service for catering
  • Polite uniformed staff 
  • On-board entertainment 
  • Improved Toilets
  • Upgraded Security System in trains
  • More RPF personnel

The complete makeover exercise will be undertaken in half Rajdhani and half Shatabdi, so totaling 30 trains. The coast will be an estimated Rs.25 crore.Coinciding with the festive season in October, the new refurbished trains would be launched under a three – month programme under Project Swarn and will have new coach interiors and improved toilets. Passengers have been complaining against the available catering, punctuality of trains and the cleanliness of toilets and linen in these trains.The official said that the deadline for the project will be three months and it will also envisage strengthening of security system in trains with adequate escort personnel by RPF. Among the 15 trains selected for up gradation  are Rajdhani Express meant for Mumbai, Howrah, Patna, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar.The Shatabdi trains include Howrah – Puri, New Delhi – Chandigarh, New Delhi – Kanpur, Howrah – Ranchi and Anand Vihar – Kathgodam. Steps would also be taken for improving punctuality by reducing delays in premier trains.Besides Cleanliness, the other focus area will be catering, the official said adding that the staff will be specifically trained on hygiene and use of trolley for serving food in premier services as part of the makeover exercise.A new uniform has also been designed for the staff in these premier trains. For on board entertainment, passengers will be offered films, serials and music among other facilities.

Cleaner, modern and punctual Shatabdis and Rajdhanis under a new project – ‘Operation Swarn’ (Gold) – Indian Railways is looking to upgrade Shatabdis and Rajdhanis in the coming months. A senior official in the Railway Ministry told, a famous Newspaper reported. 


According to the official the Railway Ministry has identified 10 key areas or parameters that require attention. These include cleanliness, linen, coach interiors, toilets, catering among other things. Wi-fi, coffee vending machines and infotainment screens may also form part of this upgrade plan. Punctuality of these premier trains has also been identified as an important focus area.

Initially the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express and Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi are likely to get an upgrade. “Rs 50 lakh each will be allotted to Rajdhanis and Shatabdis on various routes in a phased manner so that we can upgrade them for better customer experience and satisfaction,” the railway official told FE Online.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has time and again stressed on the need to improve passenger experience. Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express – two of Indian Railways’ premier train services have faced criticism over several years for deteriorating service standards and punctuality issues. ‘Operation Swarn’ is aimed at addressing these issues and bringing the quality and service standards of these trains to levels similar to the newly launched trains – Tejas Express and Humsafar Express.
