Mumbai Suburban Railway : Details of Free wi-FiRailway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated high speed wi-fi services at 8 busy Mumbai Suburabn Railway stations on 22nd August, 2016. The press release of Railway announced the details of this. The stations are Churchgate, Bandra, Bandra Terminus, Dadar Western Railway, Dadar Central Railway, Khar Road, Kalyan and Lokmanya Tilak. Following are the details.
The Wi-Fi facility is being provided at a speed of 1 GBps. A total number of 318 access points, 120 access switches and 30 fibre switches has been installed at these 8 stations to provide seamless fast Wi-Fi to the huge number of commuters visiting these stations.
In addition to 8 stations being launched, RailWire Wi-Fi has been soft launched at 8 more stations (Sealdah, Allahabad, Pune, Puri, Tambaram, Chennai Egmore, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Chandigarh) and will be formally launched soon in different parts of the country.

18 stations of Mumbai Suburban were chosen for Wi Fi services in the initial phase, out of which Mumbai Central was inaugurated with fast RailWire Wi-Fi on 22nd of January 2016. The Wi-Fi at 8 Mumbai Suburban stations launched on 22.08.2016 and in the remaining 9 stations (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Borivali, Belapur, Byculla, Kurla, Vashi, Panvel, Andheri and Thane) the work is in progress and will be formally launched soon. Pune is the other city in Maharashtra where the WiFi services have been launched and by the end of this year the service will be provided in Nagpur and Solapur also.
The service built over the fiber network of RailTel is designed to offer high-speed broadband like experience to users. Travelers passing through these stations will now be able to easily stream a high definition video while they are waiting, research their destination, download a books, movies, songs or a new game for their journey.
Across India, under this partnership, Wi-Fi services have already been formally inaugurated at 21 stations namely Mumbai Central, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Gorakhpur, Ernakulam Jn., Kacheguda, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow, Lucknow Jn., Ujjain, Bhopal, Tirupati, Tiruchchirappalli, Guwahati, Jhansi, Jaipur, Mughal Sarai Jn. and upgraded system at Chennai Central.
The work at 24 more stations (Madurai, Kanpur, Jodhpur, Gwalior, Mathura Jn, Dehradun, Thrissur, Mangalore, Coimbatore, Arakkonam Jn., Calicut, Gaya, Dhanbad Jn., Hajipur, Kota, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Borivali, Belapur, Byculla, Kurla, Vashi, Panvel, Andheri and Thane) is in progress.
Wi-Fi in MUGHALSARAI RAILWAY STATION
The internet major Google and RailTel Corporation of India have joined hands to equip railways stations with high speed WiFi networks. The WiFi will be free for the first 30 minutes over a 24-hour period. It will be a high speed network capable of delivering HD video streaming services.

Free Wi-Fi at Chandigarh Railway Station
On Saturday, Wi-Fi facility becoming operational at the Chandigarh railway station. Travelers waiting for their train can now easily download a book, songs or a game to keep themselves busy during the train journey.
The users can get up to 40 megabits per second (mbps) speed on their devices for one hour, beyond which the internet speed will come down to 1 mbps. Now all the visitors of the railway station can use it but in future only those with a PNR(Passenger Name Record) number will be able to access the facility.
Free WI-FI Facility : Year Wise Plan
Indian Railway announced that as part of free wi-fi facility at railway stations this facility already started in many of the stations and Railway give year wise plan for provision of wi-fi in next year also. Following are the details.

WI-FI Facility in Rajdhani Trains
Indian Railway announced that Train Nos.12301/12302 Howrah – New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express is provided with Wi-Fi facility. This train travels over Eastern, East Central, North Central and Northern Railway covering the States of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Satellite Communication technology used in 12301/12302 Howrah – New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express is capital intensive with annual recurring costs in the form of bandwidth charges.
A pilot project to provide Wi-Fi facility in 6 rakes of Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains has been undertaken to explore cost effective solution. All Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto category trains will be provided with Wi-Fi facility after identifying suitable cost effective technology.

Wi-Fi UpdatesIndian Railway informed that by August 15th the Wi-Fi work on Kurla,Panvel,Thane, CST Mumbai, Khar will be complete. And Railway also said that updates of Wi-Fi in 15 Railway Stations of Mumbai will launch in this week itself. The stations are Kalyan, Dadar Central and Western, Bandra.
SHUTTING DOWN OF WI-FI FACILITY PROVIDED AT CHENNAI CENTRALSouthern Railway announced that Works for provision of enhanced high speed Wi-Fi network at Chennai Central by RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. are in progress. Due to this, the existing Wi-Fi network has been shut down and the Wi-Fi facility at Chennai Central will be fully cut off from 25th June, 2016.This has been done to test the new system which will be made available by 14th July, 2016.

National Rail Museum in New Delhi to get free wi-fi and light and sound show and will install musical fountains to attract more people. And officials also planning a solar powered multi-functional museum complex and a restaurant naming "The Rails" with free wi-fi facility.

Google along with RailTell("Mini Ratna (Category-I)" PSU is one of the largest neutral telecom services providers in India) work together to expand the network quickly to cover 100 busiest stations in India by the end of this year and will expand the services to 300 other Railway stations across India. The project decide to provide free wi-fi facility at A1,A and B category Railway stations of India. Initally RailTell engaged with Google as the technology partner for setting up high speed wi-fi network in A1 and A category stations.
At Railway Stations, RailTell shall be providing power and fiber network infrastructure while Google shall provide the Radio access Network. Wi-fi services to passengers shall be provided under Railwire the retail Broadband distribution model of RailTel.
In January 2016 itself, Mumbai Central station got the free wi-fi facility. After this in 5th May 2016, Kacheguda,Rachi, and Vijayawada railway stations becomes wi-fi hot sport and in 20th May, 2016 Patna, Rachi and Visakhapatnam Railway stations also become free wi-fi category stations. The service is now live and available to users at 15 stations across the country. The Railtel- Google free high-speed public WiFi service is currently available at Mumbai Central, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Ranchi, Raipur, Vijayawada, Kacheguda, Ernakulum Junction, Vishakhapatnam, Jaipur, Patna, Guwahati, Ujjain and Allahabad. Google will deploy the service to Mumbai suburban stations including Dadar, Bandra Terminus , Churchgate, Thane, Kalyan, Panvel, Vashi, Kurla, Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, Borivali and a few others.
This free wi-fi will be available to any user who has working mobile connection on a smart phone. User will be able to easily stream a high definition video while they are waiting for the trains.

In this project Wi Fi will be provided at 400 stations. The work of 100 stations has been planned and all 100 stations expected to be completed by December 2016. The work at remaining 300 stations shall be taken up in 2017.
Details of the project
- The Project has been named as Nilgiri. Under this initiative, free Wi-Fi services will be provided to passengers in 400 A1, A and B category railway stations across the country
- Users will be able to access high speed internet for the first 30 minutes
- A special One Time Password has been generated for this purpose and users will be able to access free internet by using it
- The connection of the users will still be active after 30 minutes of internet usage. However, after 30 minutes, the speed will drop and become slow
- The project employs Google's Fiber technology . Under Fiber technology, the company provides internet services up to a speed of 1 Gigabits per second. Google Fiber was launched in 2010 and the service is available only in the USA.
- Using satellite communication technology, the Indian Railways is also providing Wi-Fi connectivity in moving trains for selected routes

Sundar Pichai , chief of Google inc, announced Google's plans for Indian Railway. Google will invest heavily in India not only for enabling internet access across the country but also for making a developed India in all sense.

Earlier 2015 year Google announced a project to connect 400 Railway stations in the country through Wi-Fi along with RailTel, the telecom arm of Indian Railway.
RailTel Corporation of India
Started in September 2000, it is a Miniratna enterprise of Government of India focusing on providing broadband and VPN services. It's main objective is to create nation wide broadband, telecom and multimedia network, to modernize Train Control Operation and Safety System of Indian Railways. RailTel's network passes through around 5,000 stations across the country.
Project is on track and the first 100 stations will be connected by the end of 2016 and Google is currently running a pilot at the Mumbai Central station which is expected to go live by January 2016.
