The Cabinet on Wednesday gave the green signal to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to start preparatory works for the Kochi Metro Rail Project.

Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan told the media after a Cabinet meeting that the DMRC would undertake works such as widening of roads and construction of road over-bridges for the metro now. It would be paid six per cent of the cost of the works as its fee.

The Chief Minister said the project had received general clearance from the Centre. Some specific clearance could be obtained in due course.
The Kochi Metro is a proposed mass transit system for the South Indian city of Kochi. It was one of the first proposed in India but was delayed for a variety of reasons.
